Agreed on Borneo Economic Community, Nusantara Will Be the Epicenter of Growth in the Borneo Region

JAKARTA Nusantara Capital Authority (NCA) through the Deputy for Funding and Investment Agung Wicaksono attended Borneo Business Roundtable 2023 at The Sultan Hotel, Jakarta on Tuesday (5/9/2023).

This event is part of a series of ASEAN Business Advisory Council events that bring together stakeholders to discuss intra-Kalimantan trade strategies, in order to encourage collaboration, connectivity, and economic integration on the island of Kalimantan to attract foreign direct investment.

Chairman of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) Arsjad Rasjid stated that the Borneo Business Roundtable had reached an agreement called the Borneo Economic Community. “This community was born from a mutual agreement to see the strengths that exist on the Kalimantan island. How can Kalimantan, as the largest island in Asia and the third largest in the world, be able to unite economically with the NCA to become the epicenter of growth," he added.

Responding to this, Deputy Agung said that there were three important things from today's meeting. First, it is an honor for NCA that could attend at the Borneo Business Roundtable as the first capital in world history to move between islands.

Second, NCA as the new capital also supports Kalimantan Island as the lungs of the world through the concept of sustainable smart forest city to help protect the world's climate.

Third, Deputy Agung is very grateful for the opportunity provided by ASEAN-BAC. "Through this opportunity, our brothers and sisters in Borneo, both from Malaysia and Brunei, have begun to come to invest in NCA," he said.

Furthermore, Deputy Agung said that there had been 19 letters of intent from Malaysia and several of them had already conducted a feasibility study to build housing. He also hopes that companies from Brunei will soon follow suit with their potential for the halal industry.

He added, Nusantara was built using the tri-city economy concept which consists of NCA Balikpapan and Samarinda. Through this opportunity, NCA will develop into tri-country connectivity consisting of Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia with Sabah and Sarawak. "So this is the essence of the Borneo Business Roundtable, how NCA becomes part of the tri-city economy and tri-country connectivity as a world city, a city for all," said Deputy Agung.

On the same occasion, North Kalimantan Governor, Zainal A. Paliwang representing the governor who leads the government on the island of Kalimantan also expressed his appreciation for this event. “I really appreciate the breakthrough made by KADIN Indonesia. Hopefully in the future the Borneo Economic Community can bring prosperity and progress to the people of Kalimantan Island, including Brunei and Malaysia," concluded Zainal.
