NCA Highlights the Importance of International Cooperation and Sustainable Water Management at the Bandung Spirit Water

BALI – Bambang Susantono, Chairman of the Nusantara Capital Authority (NCA), delivered a speech at the Bandung Spirit Water Summit, part of the 10th World Water Forum agenda at BICC, Bali, on Tuesday (21/05/2024). In his address, he emphasized the importance of water as a source of life and well-being and the need for international cooperation to ensure access to clean and safe water for all.

"We gather today to discuss an issue critical to our survival and well-being: water. Despite its importance, access to clean and safe water remains a challenge for many people around the world. To tackle this challenge, we must embrace international cooperation and uphold the principles of equality and human rights," said Bambang.

The Chairman of the NCA outlined several initiatives undertaken in Nusantara to manage water resources. One significant effort is the empowerment of natural retention basins, which have become vital sources of clean water for local communities.

"In many cases, these basins are located in areas shared by various villages and communities. As part of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in Nusantara, the government continues to engage various groups and communities in dialogue and consultation regarding the management of these basins," explained the Head of the Authority.

He also emphasized that the spirit of cooperation and harmony has long been a part of Nusantara's communities. "Local tribes such as Balik, Paser, and Dayak have lived harmoniously and protected shared resources, including water," he added.

Additionally, NCA collaborates with various international stakeholders to apply the latest technology and knowledge in water management. One concept being implemented is the "sponge city" model, which uses natural solutions to enhance the supply of high-quality clean water and ensure water security in Nusantara.

"As part of the smart city development in Nusantara, we are also implementing technologies such as an Early Warning System to reduce casualties and increase urban resilience to flooding," said the Chairman.

"The challenges in managing water resources are immense, but not insurmountable. By embracing the principles of the Bandung Spirit, we can ensure that everyone has access to clean and safe water. I call on all of us to commit to working together, across borders and regions, to protect this precious resource for our children," he concluded.

The Bandung Spirit Water Summit was chaired by Danilo Turk, former President of Slovenia. It was also attended by several notable international political figures, including Xanana Gusmao, Prime Minister of the Republic of Timor-Leste; Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile; Jigmy Yoser Thinley, former Prime Minister of Bhutan; Chandrika Kumaratunga, former President of Sri Lanka; and Jan Kavan, former Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Republic.
